Having fun can result in extra weight loss

making weight loss funAlthough weight loss is associated with a number of positive health benefits, the task of losing weight isn’t always fun for everyone. For many, the process of losing weight can be time-consuming, challenging, and even stressful. However, a new study published in the journal Marketing Letters has found that those who genuinely look forward to and enjoy their workouts are far more successful at making healthier food choices and losing weight than those who typically dread their workouts.

For the study, researchers instructed a group of study participants to take a walk strictly for the purpose of exercise and to focus on exerting themselves throughout the activity. A separate group was instructed to take a walk just for fun, while enjoying one another’s company as well as the view and their sight-seeing adventure.

The group who took a walk solely for exercise purposes ate a relatively high number of sugary foods and snacks following their activity to compensate for the exercise they performed, while the group who walked purely for enjoyment felt less of a need to engorge on sugary foods because they felt more fulfilled.

Tips for making workouts more fun

One of the best ways to have more fun with your workouts is to do activities and exercises you truly enjoy. If you enjoy walking, find new walking trails, make plans to go hiking, or walk with a group of friends to make the activity more thrilling and exciting. If you generally feel bored during your workouts, purchase or download your favorite songs and listen to them while you exercise. Or, add variety to your workouts by performing strength-training one day, cardio exercises the next day, or aerobics or anaerobics in a class setting.

How to make healthy eating more fun

If you’re not having fun with weight loss due to hating the foods you’re being restricted to eating, find new ways to flavor or prepare your foods. Are you bored with eating traditional salads? Try a new salad dressing or make taco salad for a change. Are you bored with eating the same fruits over and over? Start blending fruits into delicious smoothies with yogurt and juice, or eat more of the fruits that are currently in season. You could even download apps for your smartphone or wireless device that turn healthy eating and dieting into a fun game for those determined to lose weight and become healthier.
